sound is shaded and is not working

Specs: Windows XP
I have no sound online or in itunes, and not even windows starts up with sound. I tried going to sound, but it is shaded thus not allowing me to click on it. I think I may have deleted something earlier this week when removing programs. How do I fix this and what dell cd software do I need to reinstall sound?

Try reinstalling your audio drivers. If you don't have the disc, download the drivers from Dell:

alright, so everything was going good, i clicked download under audio on the dell website as it corresponded to my model. Everything unzipped okay, but while it was installing a red alert message box came up saying that the setup was unable to initialize the installation....uh oh?
