Specs: Windows XP, 1.7GHz / 1.5 Gb
I have a Sony VAIO VGN-FJ170P and it needed a hard drive so I got my External seagate momentus 320gb and pulled it apart and stuck it in the laptop since the hard drive was sata well the Bios on says 137gb of the hard drive and when I go into the Windows XP setup it says the whole 320 well I formatted the hard drive with NTFS and rebooted well when I did it said DISK READ ERROR PREES CTRL + ALIT + DELETE well that didn't look good so I pulled the hard drive back out put the USB connector on there and it worked just fine. So I put the hard drive back into the laptop and it said the same thing so I reformatted the hard drive and it said DISK READ ERROR PREES CTRL + ALIT + DELETE. So i pulled the hard drive out and hooked it up to my desktop computer with the SATA cords and it came up just fine to the Windows XP setup and my Bios said 320gb but when its in my laptop it don't work so whats wrong with the hard drive and I got this hard drive 7 months ago so does it have like SATA 2 and the laptop just cant use it somewhat please get back to me.

The hard Drive ID Numer is St930312as

Sata II drives are backward compatible with SATA I and the laptop would have to be very old anyway if it had SATA I anyway. The ID is not the model number so I could not find any info on the hard drive either in Google or on Seagate's search. Consider contacting Seagate about this.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

If it works on the desktop then the drive may not be the problem, what led you to believe you needed to change the hard drive on your Sony? It is possible that the Sony has some other issue that is preventing it from accessing the hard drive and that is your problem. What happens when you hit Control/Alt/Delete at that point? What was your original problem?

The hard drive is 320gb but the bios will only see 137gb and when I try to install windows xp after it copy's the installation files I am told to reboot when I do so it get "DISK READ ERROR" everytime and and when I hit Control/Alt/Delete I reboot and get this same thing I did put the drive in my desktop and format the hard drive at 120gb and it worked well I manage to get Windows 7 on there and it seems to work so far.
