Have to plug it into the mains charger before booting up and its fine, I can then unplug the charger once booted and the battery takes over OK. Any ideas folks?. That is strange. So you effectively have no backlight when on battery, but you do have backlight when on AC. So, despite being a generic battery it should work correctly. However, I did once receive a generic battery for a sony and it came with a hacked bios that I had to flash just to use the battery, so I'm thinking it is some sort of low level power management problem. Now, is it a problem because of the battery? Have you tried your old battery? Have you tried to update the BIOS? So try those things and report back.

Thanks for the reply, yes, the backlight is the problem. The laptop was given to me without a bat.
Have looked at the bios setup and doesent seem to be an answer there. however will look again in that area and will report back. Cheers Phil

Yeah, it wouldn't be in the BIOS set up, most of the SONY bios is not show to you in the user setup GUI. I had to hack my sony BIOS using a hex editor just to turn AHCI on, so there could be something for the power management that you don't see. I still would try to update the BIOS with the most current. You can check your BIOS version by opening a run box and typing msinfo32. Now check that version nember against the one sony has.

Another thought, have you tried to turn the brightness up using the FN and brightness keys when you start the computer on battery?
