Solved the 301 SMART error on boot after replacing HDD/SSD

December 9, 2016 at 16:10:08
Specs: Linux x86_64 Ubuntu 16.04, AMD A4 1200 2GB RAM
I had the exact same problem after replacing the 320GB Seagate Medalist Thin SATA drive with a PNY 240GB CS1100 240GB SSD drive. I didn't want to run Windows 8.1 and decided to install Ubuntu 16.04 on the new SSD drive, so after installing Ubuntu, the laptop boots up very fast and the touchscreen is supported too! But, each time the HP Pavillion 10 notebook was turned on it kept stopping at the BIOS screen with the 301 error to run the System Diagnostics F2 or hit ENTER to continue. Anyway, I kept trying to figure out the problem, by searching for the same error 301 encountered during the POST test. Turned out it was an easy solution. Go into the BIOS settings and select to load BIOS Defaults, save then exit. Upon restart the error message is now gone. Hope this helps other people experiencing this same problem.
