Solutions for disk read error has occurred!

Specs: Windows XP
I haven't been able to restart my computer because there's a message on the computer screen 'a disk read error has occurred'. I've tried pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del buttons so many times and nothing happens. Will this type of problem will cause any loss of data files if I take the hardware to be seen by a computer specialist at Best Buy? Unfortunately, before this situation has happened, I didn't know how to back up any of my i-tunes music or movies because I'm new at this sort of thing?!!!

In most cases if the OS can't load there is no danger of damaging more data. It most cases that is. It rare cases you could if other things also happen. But in that case you can't get your data.

You could try a linux live cd maybe. Try ubuntu or suse or fedora or knoppix to try to access the disk and get data off to usb drive or dvd's. Dunno about drm.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
