Selection options with mouse and Control Key

Specs: Windows XP, 512
I was able to select different items from a dropdown menu i.e. 5 items to pick from, i could pick only 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 etc. Now when I pick one item and move the pointer to the next item and click, it open a new window in Internet Explore. I', running windows xp 2002 & Internet explore 7. Please help - thank you

What menu are you talking about? Windows xp standard rght-click context menu?

no, its not a right click menu, its the type of menu that you might find on a website such as a real estate web site where you have the option to select different options within a menu like sold, active, pending etc.. you can select one option or as many as you like by holding down the ctrl key and clicking on your selection with the mouse. I can click on the top selection, put the pointer on the bottom selection of the list and it will select all of the options between the top of the list and the bottom of the list. but to select different options within the list I should be able to hold down the control key and click and pick different items from the list.
