Specs: Linux x86_64, AMD8-core
Hi all,

Please shed me some light;

AMD A 10 series is a 12 cores CPU ?
With 12 Compute Cores (4 CPU + 8 GPU)4 with AMD Radeon™ R7 graphics and exclusive features like AMD TrueAudio

AMD FX series is a 8 cores CPU?
AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz (4.2GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 125W Desktop Processor FD8350FRHKBOX

What does it mean (4 CPU + 8 GPU)? Why it is designed in this way? What is its main application? for desktop? or for server?

For desktop application which series which I select?

Thanks in advance.

To your questions:
1. That is an APU, which is the CPU and graphics combined into one chip. The CPU itself has 4 cores and the GPU has 8 ROP's, or Render Output Processors (iirc). And on the 8350, Yep, 8 cores. For most things a 6-core FX 6xxx series CPU is just fine.

2. Read above. APU's are a one-piece, low-cost solution to having a discrete GPU and for small form factor PC's.

3. APU's are a great way for desktops. However if you absolutely *really* need the extra power, getting a FX-series and a R9-series GPU is the way to go.

Thanks for your advice.

I need extra power. I'll wait for 10/12 cores AMD CPU available in local market.

The future of the FX-series is unclear. A few months ago it was said AMD was abandoning it, but now it appears they may continue:

BTW, what do you use your system for that would require a 10 or 12 core CPU?

I'm prepared building a PC running virtualizaion, KVM or VirtualBox. There will be about 40 VMs, desktops/web servers etc., installed but not all running at the same time. When the web servers are down visitors can visit the identical web servers on Godaddy. When the web servers are up visitors will visit the local web servers. I need more power on CPU.

The host will be Ubuntu/Debian desktop. Occasionally I will do some basic editing as well as scanning.
