screen resoulution / 20 monitor

Specs: Windows 7, 1GB
I recently purchased a 20" inch monitor and a KVM switch to connect my laptop and desktop to same monitor. On my desktop I was able to set screen resolution to 1600 by 900 but my 17" laptop keeps going back to 1280 by 800. I was able to change resolution to 1600 by 900 twice but when I leave the computer on at night and come back in the morning the screen resolution on my laptop changes back to lower screen resolution and then i am not able to change it back to 1600 by 900 because it is not listed in the display properties. I did a restart the other day and that solved the issue. I tried restarting several times but now I am not getting the option to change it to 1600 by 900. Why could this be happening?

All I can suggest is you update the graphics driver on your laptop. laptop drivers are hosted on the laptop maker's website. They are usually custom-made for the laptop maker which is why it's important to get drivers only from them. Standard drivers from the device manufacturer will most likely not work properly because they don't fully match the hardware.

thanks! I was thinking about that.
but why would it work then suddenly stop working?
I think it is when the laptop goes to sleep .
I did a complete shutdown but still didn't work.
