Screen or RAM Issue Acer Aspire 9300

Specs: Vista, 2GB
Hi Everyone,

I really hope you can help.

I have a acer aspire 9300 and the other day it's started to have some really weird issues with the screen. Sometimes when i turn the laptop on i will have no display, turn it on and there is display and everything works ok, when i stay on the welcome screen about 5 minutes into it, the screen changes to fuzzy colours (real difficult to explain) and everytime this happens the colour is different. I cannot do anything with the laptop but turn it on and off, then sometimes it will just stay black and cant see anything.

I have tried reseating the RAM, when i can finally get into the BIOS i reset it to setup defaults but even in the BIOS the screen will just scramble and freeze.

Is this some hardware fault that only acer can sort out? or can i do something about it?

Thanks & I appreciate any advice/help.

Screen cause system to freeze? I don't think so, i think u have issues with ram or hdd. First try to connect the laptop to external display and see if it's still freeze. Better download memtest to test ram.

Hi, thanks for your quick reply.

That's what i mean, it must be the system doing it. But the screen is really scrambled. I have connected it externally and it does the same thing.

How can i test the ram if i can't keep the laptop on for any longer than 5 minutes without freezing? Do you suggest if i put the HDD into my other laptop and see if it's causing the same problem? if so then its the HDD, if not then i am left with the ram.

Thanks Again.

Download memtest in another system and burn it (download .Iso for windows) memtest 86 v3.5 or memtest86+ v4.00.
hard disk can cause system to freeze but not screen to scramble , ram can cause both problems u have. Before removing hdd test the ram first.

I have tested the RAM and all is ok, i have even swapped a hard drive but the problem still occures. I have found another exact laptop from family, swapped the hard drives & RAM but again the problem is still there.

You think it's something to do with the motherboard or CPU?
