if i get this corretly u have a black bar on ur left side of the screen?
does this happen when ur in game or any application of some sort?
or when ur on the desktop, if ur on the desktop make sure the resolution is set to the native one.
if that did not help i would suspect the laptop screen to be damaged. connect the laptop to another monitor and check if those bars appear

Thanks. No, there's no bars. The left side of screen is darker, like reading a newspaper in the light but 1/4 of one side is is in the shade.
In further searching for solutions one market site gave the symptom as "a defective screen bulb." But four others didn't list it among the symptoms of a laptop screen BULB burning out but rather inferred its INVERTER becoming defective or defective. The inverter is at the bottom of screen and is a lot easier to replace.
Having searched the world I was unable to ascertain just what the symptom is an indicater of. Spent about four hours searhing !
I don't have an extra screen to test the converter as you suggested.
I took a shot in the dark. I ordered a new converter off eBay from sim_eagle for under $15. Shipping from Hong Kong however takes 10-20 days, hmmm.
By the way the laptop is an old but nice Dell Precision M90. In the meantime I'm using an old but nice Toshiba Satellite. Both have 17 inch screens.
I'll let you know whether the converter resolves the problem.

Finally received new backlight bulb replacement ($10) and installed it. Mailing time about 7 days; Hong Kong, eBay vender.
It resolved the problem: the left side quarter top-to-bottom shadow effect, which was slowly developing/moving to the right of the screen during an 8 hour daily usuage over a weeks time. Upon installation however, I noticed the new bulb showed a brighter (brightish) area on immediate lower left corner of screen, obviously caused from improper placement of the bulb. It was improperly placed in one of its end holders at bottom of screen. The placement of each wire lead is critical. One wire goes underneath its holder, not aside or atop at starting point of bulb unlike it does on opposite end of the bulb. There's less than a 64-inch tolerance; and, I needed to solder the leads (careful -- solder quickly using minimal heat). In re-positioning its placement, however, I BROKE THE NEW BULB. But now I know the cause, the solution, and the importance of proper placement of the bulb; so, I ordered a new bulb.
Wishing you the best. Thank you.
