I/O error when recovery is trying to write to the hard drive sounds like a failed hard drive to me. A failed hard drive cannot be fixed, you have to replace it with a new one.

For making sure that it is hard drive failure you can test it with Hitachi Drive Fitness Test which loads from a bootable CD. Download the CD Image from here: https://www2.hgst.com/hdd/support/d...

Create CD from CD Image using IMGBurn:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_i...

Boot your PC from it, choose "ATA Support Only" and test with "Advanced" test.

I was not able to find "ATA Support Only" and test with "Advanced" test. Still can not get the laptop to complete the recovery. I have created recovery discs for this laptop with another that is the same make and model, but can not get the laptop to boot from the discs either. Any more suggestions?
