resolution on laptop made 2nd monitor blank

November 17, 2011 at 06:46:27
Specs: Windows XP
i have a secondary monitor due to a bad LCD on my laptop. It has been running fine until today. I changed the resolution on the laptop to fit the wide screed HD 2nd monitor and now the screen is blank - I can't "find" my way back to settings due to the blank screen...any way to reset that?

You didn't supply any info about the laptop or monitor?

It could be you changed the resolution setting to one the monitor doesn't support. Or maybe you should have updated the graphics drivers before you attempted to change the resolution. Or maybe you need to press Fn + F7 (or F8) to re-enable the external display.

The resolution of the Dell Inspiron 600 M was showing up skewed on my LG Flattron E2260, so I did chnage the resolution on the laptop (to inturn change it on the LG monitor.) Further information - this monitor has 2 laptops connected to it with an IOGEAR splitter (don't recall the device name) and has worked fine until I tried to change resolution...the issue is, I can't even see anything to go back in and change back the resolution on the laptop (b/c the LCD is broken and one of the reasons I have it hooked up with my other laptop to the LG monitor)... If i can't see the screen or START button or anything, how do I change resolution back? Thanks for your efforts!!!!

The native resolution for the E2260 is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. Anything else is going to look "bad". The 600M is old (2003?), has outdated Radeon 9000 graphics, & doesn't have a widescreen display.

Disconnect the splitter & run the monitor directly from the Dell. Assuming you can see the boot screen, start tapping the F8 key, then select "enable VGA mode". That will get you into Windows at 800x600. Then you can reset the resolution. I highly doubt you're going to get HD resolution with that old Radeon, but it may become an option if you update to the most recent available graphics drivers.

Thank you! I at least have the image showing on my E2260 (where before it was blank) - The pictures is too "big" or zoomed in and I just want to bring it into focus. Even if i don't have HD, I just would like another option - the slider shows that it is pushed as far to the right as possible.
