replacing broken hard drive in laptop

Asus Laptop with intel pentium processor...

Specs: Windows Vista, 4GB
Hello

I have a laptop that just got its hard drive broken. I want to replace the hard drive with a new one and using the recovery CD that came with the laptop to restore the operating system to the default factory settings.

Can I buy just any hard drive for laptops?

Do I need a hard drive with the exact storage capacity as the original one in order to make sure that the recovery disc is usefull?

Moreover, do I need exactly the same hard drive as the original to make sure that the recovery disc is going to work with the new hard drive?

Thanks

any hard drive as long as the connections are right e.g Sata/IDE depending on age of the laptop.

No need to buy the same brand or size.
Just keep in mind that it has to have the same interface. SATA or PATA/IDE.

What could happen is that some recoveryprograms need a partitioned drive.
In that case make a small partition of 100MB and the other space is free to set.
It should work!

Thanks a lot for the information.
Indeed I think the hard drive had two partitions in the default factory settings, C and D.
