Replaced motherboard for Dell XPS 210. HD won't boot.

Specs: Windows XP, dual core/3gb
Replaced motherboard for XPS/Dim 210/9200C. HD won't boot.

HD was working on previous mobo. Mobo was hit by power surge and USB/Spkers quit working. But would boot up and function. New Mobo when booting says : "Serial ATA AHCI Bios Version SRC 1.02.23 08012006. Copyright 2003-2006 Intel. ** This version supports only Hard disk and CD Rom Drives. ** Attempts to start Windows, then gives me Blue Screen of Death saying HD may have virus.

What I thought was curious is that this machine has HD and DVD. Could this not be correct mobo? Model numbers are same.

Well, hd may be bad or have a virus.

Why don't you boot to some cd/dvd disk and see if you can run tests or live cd?

Good tests would be Memtest86 (test memory) and Seatools from Seagate (test hard drive) which can both be downloaded and bootable CD's can be burned. This will therefore also show if your motherboard and CPU are operating properly.

Question: Did you make sure that you grounded your static charge before touching either the new MB or any other component in your system? ElectroStatic Discharge can damage Memory, Hard Drive, and other components.
Question: Was this a new board or was the replacement from ebay or other recycled source?
Also: Did you reinstall the CPU heat sink properly with new thermal compound on clean surfaces? Look:

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Yes, I grounded myself before replacing board. Yes, I replaced compound on cleaned heat sink. Yes, I purchased board from reputable dealer - not ebay find.

I didn't test with a cd or dvd - but I will. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.
