Specs: Windows Vista, 4GB

What should I know in order to replace a CD player that does not work in a laptop with another one?

What features should the new cd player have to be compatible with the laptop?

Are you sure it's not still covered under warranty?

Is it a CD drive, CD burner, DVD burner, etc? You're going to have to determine which interface type it is (IDE or SATA) then see if you can find a drive that's compatible. Do you have any documentation on the laptop? Did you check the ASUS site? Posting the model number of your laptop would have been helpful.

Your problem with the drive might be with Windows and not the drive itself. Or the lenses may be dirty. lenses can be cleaned using a lens cleaning kit.

To determine if the drive is actually the problem I suggest your try booting to a bootable CD or DVD. You can abort any installation after it starts. This will tell you if the issue is hardware or software.

Also, some drives are mounted in removable drive bays. There are contacts inside that may not be making a good connection. If your drive is removable check that out. Just an in/out action may correct the problem.

Why did you enter "Asus Laptop with intel pentium processor" if you have a Compaq? And C700 is the series, not the model number. You have a Presario C792EM.

From the above, we now know that you have a "Lightscribe Super Multi DVD Writer (+/-R +/-RW) with Double Layer support", not a "CD player".

And from the parts link, we now know the HP part number for the drive is 454929-001, so now you can do a search using that number.

You should know that a usb external is easier to use.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
