recover hard disk

Specs: ms windows 3.1
I have a 486 operating on ms windows 3.1, floppy disk has been broken since 2001. I need to recover software and data from hard drive. I bought a caddy and slotted it together. windows xp will not recognise the format of the hard drive. how can i recover this data

Try connecting the drive directly to the motherboard and see if the bios can detect it.
No need to install it if don't want to, just sit it on the bench connected and see if that works. Some of these caddies are not always reliable.
There is no reason I can think of that XP can't detect the old file system.

How is the drive identified in cmos/bios setup on the 486--drive type or C/H/S settings? What is the drive model number?

many thanks for your replies. I never looked to see what was being displayed when the computer was flashing up(a bit technical for me). I have been advised that the ms windows 3.1 had some strange form of writing to disk.
The drive model number is AM78HRE or a Conner CP30174E

The drive needs to be identified the same way on the XP computer as it was on the 486. The auto ID the newer PC will use may not be the way it was seen on the 486.

If the 486 is still working I'd suggest you put the drive back in there and at least see how it's spec'd in cmos/bios setup. And if it's still working it may be easier to put a working floppy in and copy off what you need that way.
