recording from Dell Angel USB TV Tuner not wo

Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate, 512
Dell Angel USB TV Tuner, ATI - Catalyst Media Center

Windows 7 Ultimate (build 7600) 32bit, 1.80 GHz Intel Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM

I recently bought a Dell Angel USB TV Tuner through eBay. It works OK but the recording of TV shows really sucks.

First example using Catalyst Media Center (the only software that came with the tuner):

Tried to record a movie about 1.5 hours long. For the recording settings I only have 3 options; Good, Better, and Best. Of course I chose the BEST (no other details given) as my first choice. I ended up with 2 files.

MPG, 720x480, 29 frames/second, total bitrate: 8456kbps - Audio bit rate: 256kbps, channels 2(stero), Audio sample rate: 48khz.

Not bad video quality but the first file was 3.91GB in size and only 12.55 minutes long. The second was 2.04GB and only 1.07 minutes long.

The second time I tried to record, I set the recording resolution to GOOD. Only ended up with one file this time, 3.77GB in size, timer claims that there is only 1.27 minutes.

Other programs tried:

STOIK Capturer - Ready2go Video couldn't use the video source, because it's in use by another program.
amcap - unable to render the video preview stream. The parameter is incorrect. [0x80070057 / 11878]

vlc - Capture failed:
The capture device "Angel USB MPEG Device" does not support the required parameters.

Otherwise it just doesn't seem to pick up the tuner. I'm not looking to turn my computer into a full fledge media center. But since my VCR quit on me, I looking for the ability to just record a movie or tv show, every now and then.

I bought my tuner through ebay. I bought one before MSI VOX2, didn't work at all. This one works except for the recording. I have a second hand computer with Windows 7 Ultimate but the Media Center component is not installed, also it's not listed in the "Programs and Features" option either in the control panel.

Short of trying to buy another tuner, any other suggestions?

I only have used media center, works perfectly. I usually record US HD broadcast but in my town only one tends to be 720. Some others may switch but tend to be 1080i along with the secondary 480p channels.

The usb tuners need to have both a good signal since they suck by design, and they also need to have good source.

I used a usb but I am on a fringe area. I upgraded to a homerun and only lost one channel.

For media center I think you simply type it in on the start search box. If disabled or otherwise see the links here.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

Thank you for your reply. But I finally figured it out. At first I had the incoming cable wire plugged directly into the USB unit. I took it out and plugged it into the VCR and then using composite wires (red, white and yellow) I plugged them into the outputs on the VCR to the inputs on the USB tuner. The end results are a lot better.
