read disk error, press C/A/D - does not work

Specs: Windows XP
Trying to start laptop. Turning on, message reads "A disk error occurred, Press Ctrl + Alt+ Del to restart. This produces the out come. I have turned off / on keep getting the same message and action. Please help!

Sounds like the hard disk is failing and will need to be replaced. You should have someone test the hard disk and save your data if needed.

The above answer is probably correct.

That said, you don't have a disk in the optical drive or removable media inserted?

Things like flash drives or SD cards in a reader?

Your computer might be attempting to boot from something other media.

Download SIW and use it to determine the brand of hard drive. Then go to the manufacturers site to download a hard drive fitness tool. That will tell you if the drive is actually failing. That step is required in order to make a warranty claim anyway. Most manufacturers have such a test. You can use the Hitachi test if the manufacturer doesn't have one. Get SIW at the link below.
