RAM stops at 512K on startup...

Specs: Windows 7, Not sure/2 x 1024
.... but I know it has 2GB of physical RAM inside. Installation was done by a.n.other so-called IT expert, but nobody thought to check it, as we assumed they knew what they were doing.

PC runs VERY slow, has heavy software on it, hence upgrading to 2GB, but worse now than before.

Is there a utility you can run to get it to 're-recognise' what is inside, or should I take one out, startup, and then put it back again?

download a memtest cd iso from
http://www.memtest.org/

and boot from the cd and run the test
if it runs through the 2GB without an error it's not the ram.

512K? That's only 1/2 a MB.
