Whenever you buy ram, the most important thing to check is the voltage. The timings are important, but not as critical. You can download MEMTEST, software to test the new ram and make sure it's good. The fact that they work individually, shows there's a compatibility issue.

When you install the 2 sticks, does it show in the bios, or how are you measuring this? Do both slots on the mobo work? Might be a dumb question, but are you seating the ram properly?

Then logically, the ram slot is bad on the motherboard.
