RAM failure

Ibm thinkpad / R50e
April 16, 2009 at 01:29:34
Specs: Windows XP SP3, RAM
I purchased 2 x 1Gb RAM for a IBM Thinkpad R51E. Each module (Crucial) installs and runs MemTest with 0 errors but when I install them both together MemTest fails immediately. Virtual Page File has been updated
Any ideas (XP Home SP 3)

Did you use the crucial online scan to determine what is compatible with your laptop? Could be a number of things. According to the specs found on the Lenovo site your Laptop must have 1GB internally installed RAM. Here is what it says about what RAM you can use.

128, 256MB, or 512MB and supports up to 2GB maximum memory

So, 512modules are the largest it supports.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes I did use the Crucial scan and those are the modules I bought. With reference to the size of the modules, with only 2 slots available (one under the keyboard and one underneath) the only way you can achieve 2GB max is by using 1Gb modules.
thanks again for your interest and help.

That is not true. There can be 1GB soldered to the motherboard. Did you look at what I copied and pasted above. The largest module recommended is 512MB. Do the math. If you don't believe me go back to crucial or better yet, look at the manual.

The link below will take you right to the specs on your laptop.

I thought I had replied to this but obviously I did something wrong.
What you're referring to is what the R51e was shipped with when purchased - either 256 or 512MB. 1.7GHz or 1.4GHz processors, 40,60, or 80Gb hard drives. I've never heard of an IBM Thinkpad with soldered memory, although I see some of the new mini notebooks have. Thank you again for your reply.

Well, I am going by what the specs for your laptop state. I states that 512MB modules are the largest allowed but 2GB maximum memory. If you only have TWO removable RAM slots and you can have up to 2GB I don't know how that can be accomplished unless there is additional on board RAM. May not be soldered on. Could be buried and not readily accessible.
