I have an old emachine with one vga slot and was wondering if all I needed to hook up two monitors was a vga splitter cord from either walmart or best buy" or what would be best way to do it

What do you want to accomplish? If you only want 2 displays that show the same thing then a splitter should work. If you want to show something different on each display you probably would need to buy an add in graphics card.

Post the full model number of your emachine. The above thoughts assume a desktop.

As OtheHill pointed out, a splitter will allow you to run 2 screens but they will both have to display the same thing. If you're using the GeForce 6150SE integrated graphics, it would be better to install a cheap graphics card that has 2 or 3 graphics ports. That way you can run dual screens & extend the display across the two or run 2 separate displays. VGA is old news, a new card will give you the choice of using DVI, HDMI or VGA.

I just bought a Radeon R7 240 for just $15 after rebate (Black Friday deal) & there was also a Radeon HD 5450 for $10 after rebate. Unfortunately those deals are over. Keep an eye on the sales at Newegg.com.
