Specs: Windows 64
will a psu power up a system fan or hard drive if the psu is not connected to the motherboard? I connected a 120mm fan and a hard drive to a new psu, nothing powers up.

It is very possible that the power supply is looking for a return reading in order to poser up the accessories, I have not tried this without the 20/24 pin and 4/8pin motherboard connectors attached.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I just connected the psu to a motherboard that has no cpu installed. I connected a 120mm fan to the psu and it did not power up. The reason there is no cpu is I am waiting to receive one. Is it possible the psu is dead? I did not connect the 4+4 cpu power connector to the mobo.

Fingers is right (as usual LOL).

You need to do what is known as the "paper clip" test. Here's a video for Corsair but it applies to most PSU's:

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
