Problems trying to recover OS

Specs: Windows XP Home, 1.86GHZ/2GB
My computer gave me the "blue screen of death" and would not reboot. After installing my OS disk in the CD drive and tried to boot from it and repair the problem, CHKDSK /R gave me the error "This volume contains one or more unrecoverable problems".

I then tried to back up any information off of my hard drive by directly connecting it to my roommate's computer and received an error message saying "The disk structure is corrupted or unreadable".

What options do I have now to try and repair my hard drive? Or am I completely screwed and I need to reformat my hard drive and start all over?

You could try to use a live CD like Knoppix, which may be able to copy the files. Or use one of available file recovery softwares available. A partial list below, courtesy of aegis 1.

Or you could try to repair using testdisk. Look at the link below for a tutorial on test disk.

PC Inspector (freeware)
Zero assumption Recovery
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs
IMO the best, but not free
