Have you tried to access the OfficeXP CD with the windows explorer?
Maybe the drive has problems to generally read the CD.
This sometimes happens, when using a self burned copy of e.g. OfficeXP or whatever.
In that case, the best solution is to use the original installation CD.

You Mean using Start Menu - My Computer - D: - install? if so yes i have tried that way too. i was usign a copied disc then i dug out the original (which was only used once as i copy all discs in case of damage - sad i know) and tried it but no luck. i have done this before to other machines and not had a probem. the CD Drive worked fine to install Windows so i now had in my head something to do woth setup or drivers for the Disc Drive - am baffled.

the machine came from a local school and i was planning on fixing it up for a friends kid so it didnt need to be all singing all dancing - just office n internet.
any other ideas would be gratefully recieved.
thanks

Oh in that case I guess, the DVD itself is the problem.
This drives are mostly old and the laser inside is full of dust.
So change the DVD or clean the laser, if you know, how to do this.
You can also temporarily use another DVD drive for installation, or an external USB DVD, if available.
