Problem with my DVD/CD Drive

Sony / Pcv-rx651(uc)
December 16, 2009 at 08:38:22
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 1.715 GHz / 255 MB
The computer's about 8 years old (ancient I know). I can play audio Cd's in the DVD drive, But I can't play regular DVD's, Nor can I record to CD-RW or DVD-RW. It just says insert cd into drive F:
I've tried uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it. I tried the sony Esupport thing where they take control of the computer and try to fix it (but I didn't have the money cause my free 15 mins. ran out.) All i want to do is record a movie from my computer either to a Data CD or regular DVD with a DVD RW or CD RW.

I don't know if this helps or not but
Here's my Sys. Info:

First, you need software to play DVD's (video) for a DVD drive. XP did not include a DVD player on it's own. Here's a good one:

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Second, make sure you have a DVD recorder (DVD-R) and not just a regular DVD reader. Without such, you won't be able to record/backup/duplicate. The Pioneer drive you have should be seen as a DVD-R. You also can't (legally) copy DVD's due to DMCA. And "commercial" DVD's are 8.4GB whereas most "standard" DVD's are 4.7GB, so you'd have to use something to reduce their size to duplicate them. Dual-layer DVD-R are 8.4GB
