Problem w screen resolution on a 17.3 laptop

Specs: Windows 7, E5200, 4GB DDR-II RAM
I bought a new HP G72 laptop and I am using the 1280 X 768 screen resolution. Problem is that I get about 2/3" black spaces (bars) on both sides of the screen.
The other screen resolutions cover the whole screen very well, no black spaces.
I noticed the problem with the black spaces after I made a mess with the power supply of the laptop. Its screen would not light up for several minutes after the mess. I had to remove the battery and put it back in, then connect the power supply again and only after this the screen started working again.
I don't know if the blank black spaces were there before the mess, so I just want to ask: is this normal to have black spaces on both sides of the screen in 1280 X 768 resolution? The laptop has a 17.3 inches screen.

By the way the 1280 X 768 produces a blurry image. It was like that from the get go. The lettering is not crisp and sharp but it is blurred instead. Is this normal too?

The problem you had must have changed the resolution... it's not uncomon for the type of problem. The black spaces is probably because 1280 X 768 is for a 15" square monitor, yours is rectrangular and larger therefore 1280x768 does not fill the display sides... the blurred image is probably a side effect so you need to set the factory default resolution which should be 1368 X 768.
