Primary Hard Disk 0 not detected.

April 24, 2010 at 22:20:02
Specs: Windows XP
removed dead HDD from Dell Inspiron 4150 & replaced it with a HDD form my lattitude 610 which I had recently ungraded. The replacement HDD is fully functional in my Lattitude but when installed in the Inspiron. I get the "Primary Hard Disk 0 not detected". I checked in the setup utility & It shows the primary as NONE. I am at a loss of how to fix this & totally frustrated. Can you help me with this?

Even if it was detected, it wouldn't work due the different hardware. The fact that it's not detected, is probably due to Dell coding the bios to prevent people doing what you are trying to do.
You can't just swap drives in different models and expect them to work.
You may be able to get thay disk to be recognised if you wipe it clean, and start from scratch, are you willing to risk it.
Otherwise get a new drive and do you have the restore disks for reinstalation, if not you will need to purchase them from Dell.

Anmor is partially correct. You wouldn't be able to boot into Windows because the HDD is configured for the Latitude hardware.

But if it's a PATA/IDE HDD, it's not being detected because you didn't configure the jumpers correctly.

It's not a good idea to swap XP drives between systems.
You are probably lucky that the hard drive was not detected. If it had been detected, and tried to boot windows, your Latitude drive might have been corrupted. When you returned it to the correct system it might not have been operational any more.

This has all been very helpful information for me. I must have misunderstood when I was told the drive is compatible with both systems. I do have the disks to restore the system. The drive is an ATA/IDE. I Know this is a bad way to learn about fixing anything especially a computer. I have tried to reformat a disk in the past & never did get it to function again in my other laptop & it came from that one. My budget is tight (I know that everybody is feeling it), my hubby is overseas so I am trying to learn as I go. This is not to insult any one. This is just my deliema. I do appreciate all of you & welcome any help I can get.
