Power to ps2 port

Specs: win 2000
I accidently plugged the cable that powers an external hard drive into my Dell Latitude 500 laptops' ps2 port. Believe it or not, it powers the laptop up. The problem I have now is the only way my laptop can get power to work is if I plug, both, the external hd power cable into the ps2 port along with the regular power cable to the laptop. That's the only way it will work. Will not power up if either is missing. I can't go portable with the battery either. Any ideas?

Remove battery and ac adapter (s) and then press power button a few times.

Try ac adapter or battery for normal operation. If it doesn't work you smoked some poor little part.

Well I tried your suggestion and came up empty. Maybe I did fry a little something in there. Thanks anyway.
