Power does not turn on

April 26, 2009 at 09:57:54
Specs: Windows XP
I have a P3 desktop, loaded with XP. I turned on the system worked for sometime then turned it off. Later on when I tried to turn it on, nothing happened. It feels as if the power chord is removed from the system. I checked all possible reasons to see if current is not flowing to the system. I changed power supply but it did not work. I checked all connections. Please note then even fan of power supply is not turned on... In nutshell the system is completely dead. I also changed the motherboard but in vain...
Is there any trip switch that I have missed? Or something else that I have not addressed?

Why would you change the motherboard because of a power issue? The power supply would be the obvious thing to consider before anything else. Are you sure there's power at the wall outlet - circuit breaker didn't trip for some reason?

Also, are you sure that the replacement power supply was compatible with the old one?

Thank you for your response... Meanwhile I was working on the problem. There was nothing wrong with power supply or motherboard. I disconnected everything and left only power supply connected to motherboard. When I turned on the power switch located on power supply nothing happened. Then I short the power sw pins located on the motherboard with the help of a screwdriver. The motherboard came to life. The I connected all connections again. I don't know whether it was a static charge developed on the board or reverse polarity ... May be you can explain it better as I am a newbie in hardware world. In nutshell problem is resolved.
