Why did you feel the need to update the firmware? Sounds like you may have used the wrong file.

hi, i haven't burnt a disc for qiute some time, i down loaded a tv programme to burn through nero but every time it came close to finnishing failed, so i presumed firmware was out of date. i had version 1.2 after updating from the pioneer site it changed to 1.41, it looked ok.

If you were having problems with making coasters prior to the update then chances are the burner may have been wearing out.

A dirty laser lens can cause the drive to generate extra heat, which in turn can cause the burn to fail.

You can try a lens cleaning kit, or dismantle the drive and clean the lens with a Q-tip moistened with alcohol, or buy a new burner.

Try newegg.com. Be sure to get one with the correct interface (IDE/ATA or SATA).
