Solved Pinout for Optiplex 3020 HD LED header

DanielBryan: Ref your solution. Which pins are jumpered together in the OEM cable? I have the same issue but don't have the OEM cable.

OK, I did some more digging & it seems I was looking at the motherboard for the SFF not the MT. Is this your board? >> https://images10.newegg.com/Product...

Here's the manual, see page 21 of 47 to see a shot of the plug. It only has 2 wires leading to it, but there's black wires (probably ground) that jumper several of the pins. Page 23 of 47 shows the I/O panel. It has audio, USB, & LEDs. >> http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/opti...

Here's a video of the I/O panel being removed. If you freeze it at about the 49 sec mark, you might be able to figure out the wiring of the plug. >> http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/555...

Thanks for your reply. Mine is a black 12 pin header in the lower left in front of the INT SPKR header. Mine was a mini-tower and the case was destroyed in an accident. I mounted it in another case but get an I/O cable error when I power up. Hitting F1 continues the boot and after that the machine is fine. I need to solve the I/O cable error. The BIOS cannot be modified to eliminate the error.

Sorry, the yellow header is for audio, I don't know why I suggested that one. In the picture in response #1, the header you're asking about is the upper right, near the CMOS battery. It appears to have 12-pins.

DanielBryan's solution seems fairly clear. You don't need to jumper anything, you need to cut the 12-pin plug from the original LED cable (it only has 2 wires), cut the plug off the LED cable in the case (it also only has 2 wires), then splice the Dell plug onto the case wires. Do you have the original case so you can cut & re-use that plug?

The original case was destroyed and I do not have the LED cable. I found the machine laying in the road with a crushed case and no front bezel. Everything works except the cable error as described. If I had the pinout I can fabricate the proper cable. Dell support is no help.

Thanks for your replies. That is indeed the MOBO. I've tried every conceivable variation of the pinout I can think of. At this point I ordered another I/O panel from Amazon for $10. Its always possible it is a fault in the MOBO itself, but for $10 what the heck, its worth a try. It should be here next week.

When all is said and done, it was a bad I/O panel. Plugged in the replacement and bingo, no error. Modified the case to accept the new panel and life is good.

Dell should be ashamed. This was a non critical error and should have been able to have been ignored with a BIOS setting.
