May 31, 2010 at 10:19:49
Specs: Windows 7
My new Dell as an ST3500418AS hard drive, what connectors do I need to piggy back my old Maxtor HD to it?
none of the connectors in the Dell match!!
I'm running windows 7 on the dell and XP home is on the Maxtor.
Please advise
Regards Keith

Sounds like your old Maxtor is an IDE drive. Your new drive is Sata. Check to see if your mobo has an IDE connection. If it does, get an IDE ribbon and connect it to the mobo and hook up the drive. You may have to set the jumper on the back of the drive to Slave.

Many new systems are dropping IDE support altogether so you *may* be out of luck. Were you hoping you could just boot off it & run XP? Don't count on it.

You could get an external hard drive enclosure for IDE HDDs fairly cheaply. Then you could connect to your Dell with a USB cable.
