Specs: Windows XP, 3 gb
I just installed a refurbished motherboard in Gateway laptop model T-6330U/W-350i. It also needed a new HDD. I upgraded from a 250gb 5400 rpm seagate to a 320gb 7200 rpm WD. The Phoenix BIOS reports the HDD as installed but has it disabled and won't allow me to enable it. Windows XP installation says "no disk detected" when it gets to the partitioning and formating stage. Does anyone know what the problem is?

XP doesn't recognize SATA HDDs. You either have to load the drivers from a floppy by pressing F6 at the beginning of XP setup, OR you need to change the HDD setting in the BIOS to "legacy mode", "IDE mode", "IDE compatibility" or something similar, OR you need to create an entirely new XP disk with the SATA drivers slipstreamed into it.

I suggest you partition & format the HDD before attempting to install any OS. Use the software from the HDD manufacturers website.
