PC suddenly turns off while playing but fans are still on

August 16, 2015 at 23:06:52
Specs: Windows 7, AMD A8-3870k / 8GB
After a few minutes (around 20-30 minutes) of playing games my PC would always turn off by itself. Fans and everything are still on though, case fans are running, gpu and cpu as if it didn't really shut down completely, they aren't slowing down either and the pc looks like it is still running the game. I have to press the restart button on the case to open it again.

I've checked the temps on CoreTemp, my CPU always gets to 59C max (stock cooler and no overclocking). My GPU sits on 60-65C too so I'm guessing that it is a PSU problem. If it is a PSU problem then shouldn't it power off completely and turn off even the fans?.

This PC will never be as fast as yours.

Yes, if it was a faulty PSU I would expect everything to stop running.
Your symptoms may indicate a faulty motherboard.

What about a bad monitor or monitor cable?

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Does it only happen while playing games?

Yes it only happens while playing games, especially ones that require more power. I've spent almost a day just watching in VLC while downloading and stuff, it doesn't turn off. I also edit high quality videos and images but it doesn't shut down either.

EDIT: Sounds stop when it turns off so I guess it's not related to my monitor or anything. Is there like a way to test the motherboard if it is really at fault? Everything else other than it shutting down seems fine...
