Maxtor Diamondmax 16 80gb hard drive
May 21, 2010 at 11:23:39
Specs: Windows XP, sempron 1600/756mb
I have bought a new hard drive, a maxtor 80gb(ata) and went to connect it to my pc. Removed his jumper to make him slave, inserted the data and electric cable in his sockets but the pc is shuting himself down after 1 second i start him up. I tried to start the pc with just this new hard drive(no old one or dvd-rom/floppy) but same thing occured. I can use the pc if new hard drive is removed, my primary hard drive is a 80gb western digital(ata).
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance

I'd make it a Secondary Master or a Seconday Slave, not a Primary Slave.

If the PC will not stay up with it connected, it sounds to me like the drive is defective.

The three most important things in computing:
1. Backups, 2. Backups and 3. Backups.

Could be your power supply is weak & the added HDD is pushing it over it's limit. Either that or you simply don't know what you're doing. The fact that you're trying "all sort of jumper positions" makes me think it's the latter.

Just mentioned in my main post "I tried to start the pc with just this new hard drive(no old one or dvd-rom/floppy connected anymore) but same thing occured.", so if my power suply can hold the old hdd+others, it can hold just this one too without the rest

I made him from master>slave and after it i switch it to cable selection, enough movement for me to use that phrase. My english in describing these tehnical activities is kind of weak...
