Sony / Rs222

Specs: Windows XP, 2800+amd athlon,
Can i replace the A7n266-vx board with a A7n266-vm, without any mods. I'm not good with pc technology. My sony rs222 only starts the fans and makes the usual hard drive whizz, but i don't get the beep, and nothing else happens. Thanks in advance, for any info.
I did try an identical board, but it only lasted a few minutes. Would that point to the cpu. Its an amd 2800+

"usual hard drive whizz"

Changing your broad is probably not going to fix this. It sounds like a bad harddrive but to confirm, pull it out of the laptop and install it into a friends computer. If it is an older drive then most computer stores sell adapters that will allow you to do this for around $9.

the whizz , i refer to, is the normal start up sound from the drive, the faint whistle while the hard drive ramps up to speed. Even with the hard drive disconnected, i still get no joy.Everything starts as it always did, except there is no beep, and the screen shows nothing. The screen is working ok on another computer, the pc is a desktop, not a laptop.

I'm sorry most Sonys are laptops. Before buying another main board which depending on how old the system is might be hard, I would do some more trouble shooting first. Pull out your RAM and Video Cards and put them back in. They may have come lose and just need to be reseated. You said you had another computer, try puling the Graphics card from that computer and swapping unless the graphics card is built into the mother board.

If all fails then you need to find out the Formfactor for your mainboard and the one you want to replace. This will tell you if the screw holes will line up and if the power supply will work with the new mainboard. You can get this information from their online page.

Thanks, but i've been through all that, which brings me back to my original question.
Whether or not i can change my board for the VM model. I will try the sony page as you suggest, i think i already did, though.
Thanks for trying, it is appreciated.
This Sony is getting slightly closer to the rubbish tip. lol
I suppose it will be more cost efficient to get a new tower. Thanks again, regards..Paul

Probably will be because new systems change their formfactors on purpose to get you to do just that. If you want a newer faster system you will probably have to buy a new system. You can always look for replacement parts on E-Bay or some resellers but for about $100-200 more you could just get a hole new system with warranties and the latest Windows. I would wait til after the 22nd though because that is when the new Windows 7 is to be released with the systems.
