pc freezes when accessing hd, loses time

Specs: Windows XP, ASUS P4VP-MX / 256MB RAM
my xp pc freezes when i try to access any files on the slave drive. restarting it using the reset button will also freeze the pc when it reaches the motherboard logo. i have to turn it off, and then on, before i can use it again. i also notice that the computer loses time when this happens. it's like a complete freeze on the system, including the motherboard battery.

i currently have two 40gb seagate hard drives installed, and both are partitioned. i have no problem with the primary drive. i'm using the slave drive mainly for file storage, no major software installed on it. i am able to and had already scanned for viruses on the slave drive, and it's clean (according to the anti-virus software). however, when i tried using windows error check and repair on it, it freezes; also with the chkdsk on ms-dos.

i can't tell if this is caused by corrupted files/viruses, or if it's a hardware issue. this computer was recently formatted three weeks ago, so it shouldn't have accumulated that much gunk on it. will changing the motherboard battery help??

Enter bios and turn on S.M.A.R.T. for both drives. Then download seatools from seagate website and test both drives. If seatools find the slave drive bad, start to back up the data immediately. The cmos battery is bad, replace it.
