PC Does Not Read DVDs/CDs/Games in Drive

June 30, 2009 at 08:55:05
Specs: Windows XP
So I insert my favourite film, my favourite music, even a PC game into the drive and I wait... I wait for a while and nothing happens. No autoplay appears, there's no change when I look in 'My Computer'. Nothing happens, just as though there was no disc in the drive at all.
But if I insert an installation disc in the drive, my computer immediately reads it and beings to open the application.
Why is this and what can I do to sort it?

Regards, Natalie

Double check to see what type of disc (CD or DVD) the 'installation disc' is. It could be that your drive is able to read one type but not the other?

it might sound dumb and I know there is R and RW, but what other types of discs are there?

"what other types of discs are there?"

I deliberately put (CD or DVD) in parentheses to help explain...I guess it didn't work...lol. What I meant was, do CD's work but not DVD's? or do DVD's work but not CD's? There's a separate laser for each. If one laser burns out, the drive will read one type of disc or the other, but not both.

Neither work.
As explained in my orginal question music CDs/movie DVDs/games can not be read. But if I insert a disc that contains i) files ii) a program etc it will work!
