PC build made fan grindig sound and now won't turn on.

Specs: None
I'm building a pc and it worked one day and when I took out cables and put back it worked but made a fan grinding sound and I turned it off now it won't turn on. There is a red light by the CPU icon in top right of motherboard and psu fan and motherboard fan both spin for half a second and then stop. Help. I have only minimal things connected. I followed the checklist and I assembled it outside of case.

Can you explain which cables you took out?

. I followed the checklist and I assembled it outside of case

Is this still outside of the case or have you now installed it into a case?

If you have installed it into the case, can you tell us if you used the stand-offs underneath the motherboard? and ensured that they are aligned correctly with the holes on the board?

You need to also and very importantly specify EXACTLY the components you have, very importantly the power supply unit.

Tell us exactly what you are looking at, where is the motherboard, if it is outside of the case what is it sitting on, what have you installed onto the motherboard? eg ram, cpu, gpu etc.

My initial thought is the PSU or something shorting out the board probably at the back. But need to know more before we can offer any more help.

Which fan made a grinding sound? The CPU fan?
Did any wires got cut?
Some more details would help.
We cannot see what you are doing or how the system is installed.

You didn't post your hardware specs but it sounds like it might be the power supply. Is it a cheapie or a quality name brand unit? Another possibility is the thermal paste between the CPU & heatsink was applied improperly.
