Overwritten folder, but deleted files?

November 21, 2010 at 19:56:05
Specs: Windows Vista
Some time ago I was moving around my documents into different folders on my USB, when I accidentally deleted one of the folders permanently. I tried to remedy this by clicking Control + Z and also right-clicking and choosing 'Regret' (I think it's called 'Undo' in English, but I'm not sure; in Swedish, it's called "Ă…ngra" = "Regret"). All that happened was that I created an empty folder. I tried to do this several times, but I only wound up with a bunch of random, empty folders, two of them named after two documents in the folder I deleted.

I tried running a deleted file recovery program, but it couldn't find anything else at all.

So what I'm wondering now is, did I overwrite the folder by doing this? Or did I delete it? Is there anyway to retrieve this at all?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try searching by name for the files they may be somewhere else on the disk/usb memory device. If you can't find them then they have been deleted. I have had some success with a utility by "Glary"(http://www.glaryutilities.com/) which allows for recovery of deleted files and this is possibleo if the files have not been overwritten or the disk/USB memory has not been formatted. When a file is deleted is not actually gone - just the pointer or index that identifies where the file is on the disk is deleted.

Try using a program called Recuva. Get it at the link below.

Removable media usually don't have Recycle Bins.
If you create files and/or directories it may overwrite what you had deleted.
You have to run file recovery software right away.

Thanks for the replies. Recuva was a miracle tool, really. I've tried several recovery programs but none of them never found the deleted files. This fantastic program not only found the files, but recovered them in perfect condition. Thank you so much.
