Hello, My optical drive stopped reading(therefore doesn't write them either) CDs but still reads and writes DVDs It happen after I entered a cd-rw and did format but the computer was shutted down in the middle.
My computer's specs:
4GB ram
Q2400
Windown 7 x64
You probably need to replace the drive. There are 2 lasers in a combo drive. One for CD & one for DVD. Either your CD laser is burned out or the laser lens is dirty. The lens can be cleaned either by dis-assembly or by use of a lens cleaning kit. With the price of new combo drives being what they are I suggest replacing that unit. Look at the link below for a good online vendor.
I too suspect the drive is failing. Could test with some bootable disk just to see if it could be software related. Simple to test a "restore point" also. Safe and fast usually.
Darn blu-ray burners are almost cheap enough to consider.
1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
I will check with a bootable CD I alrady tried to backup and its not the computer because I have switched drives therefore the problem is the drive and not the computer
