Opinion on WD Caviar Green SATA HDD

Specs: Linux, AMD 955
Hi folks,

Has any folk used following WD HD before?

WD Caviar Green
SATA Hard Drives
1 TB, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/prod...

What will be your comment. I never used WD HD before only Seagate HD. I like this WD HD because it has 64MB cache. Its price is more or less the same as Seagate and other brand HDs of same storage capacity.

TIA

Your own link has a link to reviews of many 1TB drives. Read the first one there.

The WD green is a 5400RPM drive that is suited for storage but will be slower if used as the OS drive. WD drives are good drives. That is my preferred make.

Hi OtheHill,

Thanks for your advice re 5400RPM. I'll reconsider it.

"I like this WD HD because it has 64MB cache"

The cache isn't all that important. The fact that it's a "green" HDD means that it's slow. As OtH pointed out, it spins at just 5400RPMs & is better to use as a storage drive than to run the OS.

The most popular 1TB HDD these days is the Samsung SpinPoint F3 which can be found for about $60 if you know where to look.
