Specs: Windows
Appears on top left of screen. Can't get rid of it. When I pressed F2 as indicated, I then got "Phoenix Securecore Tiano Setup". Out of my depth here. Please help!

Either the OS needs reinstalling (factory recovery), or the hard drive is starting to fail.

Try factory recovery first (but back up your data before doing factory recovery).
To start factory recovery on most Acer laptops, press Alt-F10 at boot time.

If you can manage to get into safe-mode successfully, do so. Then, as per phil22, safeguard all your personal/important file by copying to external storage. Typically dvd but an extrrnal hard drive too is nice...

if you cannot get into safe-mode at least... then download burn to a dvd the Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Boot with this dvd. It is a Linux based utility. It will load itself into RAM only, and the hard drive will then simply be a resources the OS installed (into RAM only). You can then copy your files that way.

Hi Popsicle, did it work previously?

I wonder if you have left a dvd or cd in its drive and if so, that could be causing the problem.

With queries such as this, it is always best to provide make *AND* full model number.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Correction my reference to Kaspersky Rescue Disk...

While very likely you can do as suggested and copy/save your files to dvd etc. using Kaspersky, a better option is to download Ubuntu (another Linux variant) from ubuntu.com. It's free to download/use etc. and quite safe; as are just about any of the downloads recommended here by the regular and assorted volunteers.

Burn it to a dvd, and boot with that. It will load into RAM only, and present a windows style desktop. From there you can navigate to/locate your hard drive and then copy data from it to dvd.
