Operating laptop on AC power w/ dead battery

Specs: Windows XP Pro
I have a Toshiba Satelitte A25-s208 laptop that has been unused and stored for quite some time. The battery appears to be dead. Should the computer function on AC power even though the battery is dead? I will acquire a new battery as soon as possible, but was hoping that I could operate it off of AC power until I was able to get a battery.

Thank you!

All laptops are made to run on ac only even with the battery out. I take mine out always. Only put it in if I don't have ac available.

Thank you. I figured out the problem I was having. The laptop was stored long enough the the cmos settings were lost. It's running now.

I like your idea of removing the battery and running on AC whenever it's available. I think I'll adopt it.

Two of my three old laptops have dead batteries and they've been running on ac for years. Use the solution jefro gave.
