older Gateway power supply - blower??

Specs: Windows XP Pro, P41.4GHz/128
I was given a Gateway LP MiniTower TBR E4200 an older computer. Only 600mhz system with 320 MB RAM.

This computer doesn't have a CPU fan, instead it is surrounded by a plastic sleeve (for lack of better words). It seems to be attached to the power supply and acts like a blower that cuts in every now and then. My problem is with the noise it makes.

I was wondering if this blower, can be removed and replaced with an ordinary CPU fan.

It's smaller than a regular PSU and mounts to the case on its smaller side? If it's one of those, I think the fan has the same 3" x 3" dimensions but is thinner than the regular PSU fan. It's going to have the same 12 v requirements as a regular fan so if you can get it to fit then yes, it will work. Do you have a model number for the PSU or a link to a pic?

I took the power supply out for a closer look. Mounted under the power supply is a big fan like a system case fan. I tried to upload pics to my site at hitanykey.webs.com but haven't been successful yet - technical difficulties...

There is a big heatsink on the CPU but very little room for anything else since its almost tight up against the memory chips.

The only way I can put on a fan would be to replace the heatsink with a smaller one. I decided to leave it all as is right now.

The fan only cuts in every now and then. I use to have my computer on top of my desk but decided to place under where the noise is not so annoying.

Thank You for your reply.

I acquired 8 or 10 of the power supplies I mentioned above at auction a few years ago.. I used one to replace the PSU in minitower celeron gateway. These were 145 watt and the original one was about 80. That's why I was asking about a more precise description as I might have what you need. The ones I have are Powertech model # FSP145-51NI. I found a pic here:

It has the same dimensions as the PSU in the old emachine cases with the super socket 7 motherboards but it mounts on the small side whereas the emachine ones mounted on the larger side.
