older external hard drive

Specs: Windows 7
I have an older external hard drive hooked to my newer
computer- with windows 7. I have been very ill and this
is the first opportunity I've really had to use my old external hard drive for storage- but now I'm not sure how and what to do about finding or even using it. Yes, I have a booklet some where...but I'm not sure where. Can you help point me in the right direction?
Thank you,waldorf
I have 2 screen captures
1) computer info
2) shot of system
but no where to upload them to you

I don't think the above information is necessary. External hard drive use is pretty straight forward.

Does the external drive use USB to connect to the computer?

Does the external also use AC power?

All you should need to do is connect it and Windows 7 should find it.

If you want to clean it up you can format it or go one step further and delete all partitions and create a new partition and then format that partition using NTFS.

To work with the drive you can go to Windows Disk Management to view the drive even if it is not formatted. If it is formatted then you should see it in Computer.

To get to Disk Management: Go to Start> Control Panel> Administrative tools> Computer Management> Storage> Disk Management. Right click on the External drive to see a drop down menu of choices to perform.

One important note is to be sure to always use the "safely remove" icon that will show in the tray by the clock once an external is connected. This is so the partition does not get corrupted.

If you are still not sure, feel free to ask more questions.

It should come up as a drive in "Computer" (via Start button). You should be able to copy and paste files to it but if it is a backup device it might have some software incorporated for this purpose.

What are you intending to use it for?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Yes, thank you, to all who replied. I have done all the steps you kindly replied with-the problem is being able to know for certain this is the old back-up hard drive. I wanted to give you a screen shot to point out what I see and 'hope' is the ehdrive because I don't want to re-format it if it isn't. How can I send you a screen shot?
