Old HD won't boot up on new motherboard

Specs: Windows XP, AMD9600 4GB
My power supply went bang the other night, put another in the case but nothing wouod get past the post start "beep".
Took the HD (SATA) out and placed it into another computer, starts up a treat!
Purchased new mother board AMD 9000 Quad core and DDR2 memory and the old disk won't get past the Windows Loading page, just keeps going through the startup sequence repeatedly.
I put my HD back on the old PC along with the two other drives and looked into Manager,I can see the hard drive, but it has no drive letter, so I can't even change that, because its greyed out.
I have tried to re-install windows but it keeps asking me to re-partition the drive, which I know will distroy all the data I have on it, thats the crux of the matter I desperately need all that data.
HELP?
Dave

You have to try to repair hal. If not then new install with the correct drivers.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

You generally can't take a HDD with XP already installed & move it from one system to another & have it boot into Windows. XP will have to be reinstalled. The "repair install" method *might* work but since you have a SATA HDD, the SATA drivers for the new controller will have to be installed at the very beginning of the installation.

"I desperately need all that data."
I would get the data before I tried a repair install, there is a chance you could lose it

Come on, 'Dave' is asking what HAL is. It's "Heuristically-programmed Algorithmic Computer":

Remember these HAL quotes:

"Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?"

and

"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Yeah, I was reminded of the 2001 movie in another thread and when Jefro mentinoned HAL I just couldn't resist.

I don't know much about HAL but this may help:
