The FX5500 is not a very good card. If you overclock it, you'll have a slightly faster "not very good card". The difference in performance between 4X & 8X AGP is insignificant. If you want better performance, get a better card.

Meh, if you're bored and just want to see how far you can push it, sure. But it's a really out of date card and it won't really matter.

I once overclocked an FX5200 (same core as the 5500) till it displayed artifacts.

But before the vram crapped out, the 3DMark 03 score went from around 850 to 1100. Actual games received a much smaller boost. Slow, slow card that thing was--even the Pentium II-450 host didn't seem to act as a bottleneck.

I used to overclock the livin' crap out of my 9600Se. I ended up with a 9600Se with vastly improved numbers and a faster slide show in most games.

Or, as jam put it, a crappy card with with the livin' crap overclocked out of it.

You can use 8x AGP cards in older slots, it just won't run at 8x. Also you need to verify your board supports the different voltage. I have a 6800GT in a 4x slot in my TV machine and it works just fine.
