Are you using original Canon Ink cartridges or compatible third party cartridges?
I guess, you need to use originals.

On many inkjet printers the print heads are a distinctly separate item(s) and print heads have a limited life span. At 5 years old it is very possible that the print heads need replacing. Check your manual and Cannon community sites for information on the expected life of the print heads.
On many inkjet printers, especially the less expensive ones, the price of the print heads are close to or more than a new similar printer so look into this as well before purchasing print heads. You may be able to shop ebay for print heads at a reduced price but make sure that you ONLY purchase Brand New, Original Cannon Parts, in their Original Unopened Packaging.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Are you saying the nozzle test prints a complete pattern? What about printing a test page? If those two tests print OK then the problem is NOT with the ink you are using.
